In this session we identified the direction we want to go in with this project. We also had the chance to listen to other groups interpretation for the brief, and were pleased ours was a little different!

We have decided to look into authenticity and fiction.

Authenticity

• Sentimentality
• Special edition books
• The book as an object, something you treasure and keep
• A book that is pleasant to look at and use
• Involves quality of paper, creative printing methods and bindings
• A reaction against the mass-production of paperback, use & throw away books and ebooks/ digital reading

Fiction

Most other groups were looking at non-fiction, however all of our group think of fiction when it comes to libraries.

• Fiction is a story.
• Its far more creative than non-fiction, and the library relates to it as a hub of creativity not just intellect.
• Anyone can write a story, and each one would be unique.
• When it comes to fiction, the library is a portal for travelling to other worlds and experiencing all kinds of adventures.
• Has many different genres, everyone has a favourite.

We also felt that history tied in with a lot of this, whether it be with fiction involving famous novels by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen or history, with the important placed on books in medieval England.

History

• Books were a main form of communication and the sharing of ideas
• People could die, be executed for printing and even reading certain books. They were very powerful
• Libraries with a prominent history have a special environment - people go for the place as much as the books.
